Start with the global five-zone packing system, then add MTB-specific failure modes.

Protection: helmet appropriate to riding, knee/elbow protection as rider/terrain warrants, gloves, eyewear.

Fit/control: shoes, pedals if personal preference matters, hydration setup.

Mechanical: destination/transport-compliant spares; do not carry tools prohibited by transport rules.

Wear/recovery: extra gloves, chamois/shorts, gear-drying strategy; hands/shoulders become trip-limiting.

Moab modifier → heat/sun/dust and trailhead self-sufficiency.

Whistler modifier → wet/cool variation, park protection and gear drying.
