Detailed planningRead the full guide

A winter cycling week built around Mt Lemmon, desert variety and enough recovery to make the trip feel like an escape rather than a camp.

THE WEEK AT A GLANCE

Base: choose one Tucson base for the full week. Start with central Tucson versus Oro Valley; do not move hotels simply to get closer to one ride.

Bike: road/gravel rental is highly competitive for a short trip; bring or ship only when exact setup materially improves the week.

Vehicle: decide after base + bike. A car is useful for dispersed rides and mixed activities, but not automatically mandatory for every central/rental itinerary.

DAY 1 — ARRIVAL / SETUP

Collect rental or assemble personal bike. Reproduce fit, check brakes/shifting/tyres and ride only enough to verify the setup. The Loop is a natural low-pressure orientation option when current access and conditions suit.

DAY 2 — MODERATE DESERT DAY

Use road or gravel terrain that lets the rider learn heat, wind, surfaces and local traffic patterns. Keep enough margin that the first meaningful ride does not compromise Mt Lemmon.

DAY 3 — MT LEMMON FEATURE DAY

Use the dedicated Mt Lemmon Logistics guide. Check forecast at multiple elevations, road status and wind. Start conservatively, carry the appropriate descent layer and treat the descent as part of the ride rather than an afterthought.

DAY 4 — RECOVERY / TUCSON AFTERNOON

Short Loop spin or full rest. This is the natural Ride Before Lunch day: use the afternoon for Tucson food/culture/desert experience or simply the hotel/pool. Curated experiences can appear here if they genuinely improve a mixed holiday.

DAY 5 — SECOND FEATURE: ROAD OR GRAVEL

Choose a route that feels different from Mt Lemmon. The point is to show Tucson's breadth, not find the second-hardest climb. Gravel riders must match route surface to the actual rental/owned bike.

DAY 6 — OPTIONAL MTB / VARIETY DAY

Strong road-only riders can use another road/gravel day. Riders who want to sample Tucson MTB should rent an appropriate MTB and use a guide/shuttle where terrain or local knowledge warrants it. Do not send a road cyclist onto advanced Mt Lemmon MTB simply because MTB is now part of Pedal Elsewhere.

DAY 7 — EASY FINISH

Shorter Loop/road ride, coffee/lunch, then return rental or clean/repack personal bike. Avoid creating a fragile departure by squeezing in another maximal ride.

DAY 8 — DEPARTURE

If using a personal bike, allow enough time for inspection and packing. If rental, confirm return timing before finalizing the airport plan.

BOOKING ORDER

1. Pick central Tucson vs Oro Valley.

2. Decide road/gravel focus and whether MTB is an add-on.

3. Price rental vs bring vs BikeFlights using actual dates.

4. Book hotel after storage/vehicle needs are known.

5. Decide whether a rental car adds value across the whole week.

6. Book flights/ground transport.

7. Add only the non-riding activities that improve the holiday.

8. Keep Mt Lemmon date flexible for conditions.
