Which Bike Should You Bring or Rent?

Girona supports both road and gravel trips, but “do both” is not automatically the best answer. One bicycle can maximise flexibility while being compromised for the routes you most want to ride. Start with the trip's priority surfaces.

CHOOSE ROAD WHEN

Your priority is paved climbing, longer road loops and efficient distance. A familiar road bike simplifies fit and equipment decisions. If renting, focus on size, gearing and brake/control setup rather than chasing the highest component tier.

CHOOSE GRAVEL WHEN

Unpaved routes are a central reason for visiting and you are prepared to research surfaces more carefully. “Gravel” covers everything from smooth tracks to rougher terrain; route difficulty cannot be inferred from the label alone.

TYRES MATTER

For gravel, confirm actual tyre width, tread and clearance rather than assuming a rental category is suitable for every route. For road, tyre choice still affects comfort and confidence. Use manufacturer limits and route conditions when making equipment decisions.

GEARING

Girona's varied terrain makes gearing relevant in both disciplines. Match the available range to the rider and planned climbing. Do not assume a premium bike comes with the easiest gearing for a long day.

BRING ONE BIKE OR RENT THE SECOND?

A useful hybrid strategy is to bring the bike that covers most of the trip and rent a different category for one or two specialist days. Compare the rental cost with the complexity of flying two bikes or compromising every ride.

ROUTE RESEARCH

Before committing to gravel, inspect current route information from reliable sources and local knowledge. Access, surfaces and conditions can change. A GPX file proves only that someone created or rode a route at some point; it does not guarantee current access or suitability.

WEATHER EFFECT

Rain can materially change unpaved surfaces. Build route flexibility into a gravel itinerary. A road alternative can preserve the day when conditions make the intended gravel route inappropriate.

RENTAL QUESTIONS

Exact size and geometry

Tyre width/specification

Gearing

Brake setup

Pedals

Repair kit supplied

Tubeless/tube setup where relevant

Damage/roadside support terms

What substitution is permitted if reserved model unavailable

DECISION RULE

If 70–80% of your priority riding clearly falls into one category, optimise for that category and solve the minority days separately. Avoid carrying a compromise across the whole trip merely to avoid one rental day.
