ROAMING, ESIM OR WIFI: START WITH WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE
Check the home plan first: countries covered, data allowance, fair-use limit, hotspot allowance and charge after the allowance. Existing Spain roaming can be the simplest choice when the allowance fits the trip. There is no benefit in buying a second data plan you do not need.
A local eSIM is worth comparing when the home plan is expensive or too small and the phone is compatible. Wi-Fi can cover route preparation at the hotel, but it leaves a gap for arrival messages, changed meeting points and support away from the hotel.
CHECK THE PHONE BEFORE BUYING
Airalo requires an eSIM-capable device without carrier restrictions. Check the exact device and its carrier-lock status, including any regional model differences. An eSIM purchase does not make an incompatible or locked phone work.
Read the selected plan for data allowance, validity, included countries, hotspot use, top-ups and whether calls or texts are included. Keep the home number available if you need verification texts, and check the home carrier’s charges for its use abroad.
SIZE THE PLAN AROUND HOW YOU TRAVEL
For a short hotel-based trip, begin with your recent phone data use and add a margin for arrival and route changes. For a longer trip, allow for several transfers and navigation days. Video, photo uploads and laptop tethering can change the requirement much more than messaging.
Download maps and route files over Wi-Fi. If the itinerary leaves Spain, compare the actual country list of a regional plan with separate local plans; do not assume a Spain plan covers an onward country.
BEFORE LEAVING THE AIRPORT
Read the selected plan’s installation and validity-start instructions before installing; do not assume all packages activate at the same moment. Keep the installation instructions accessible offline and use a reliable connection.
After arrival, check the intended data line, roaming settings required by that plan and which SIM handles calls. Open a map, send a message and check the rental pickup details while help and Wi-Fi are available. Check settings again if the phone starts using the home data line.
