Location details

Choose the base before the hotel.

Each town creates a different ride map, transfer burden and wider holiday. These are functional choices, not interchangeable hotel locations.

Best all-round first base

Port de Pollença

Direct access to Formentor and the northern lanes, with the deepest concentration of bike hire and rider-oriented accommodation.

Best for western mountains

Port de Sóller

Choose it for immediate Tramuntana access and a stronger non-riding waterfront stay; transfers and flatter recovery rides are less convenient.

Best for quiet-road variety

Alaró / central foothills

A rural alternative for riders prioritising inland lanes and mountain access over the resort convenience of the coast.

ShortResearched route

Pollença and Alcúdia lanes

About 35–45 km · mostly rolling road

Start: Port de Pollença

Use the lanes through Pollença and Alcúdia for the arrival-day shakedown. Add or remove the coastal section rather than turning the first ride into a mountain test.

MediumResearched route

Cap de Formentor out-and-back

About 40–50 km · roughly 900 m climbing

Start: Port de Pollença

Ride to the lighthouse and return, with Mirador Es Colomer as the natural shorter turnaround. The repeated rollers make this harder than its distance suggests.

LongResearched route

Lluc and Sa Calobra

About 105–120 km · 2,000–2,500 m climbing

Start: Port de Pollença

Approach through Pollença and Lluc, descend the Coll dels Reis hairpins to Sa Calobra, then climb back out. It is a feature day, not a route to stack beside another hard ride.

  2. Transfer day: vehicle move to Port de Sóller; no feature ride.
  3. West block: Deià–Valldemossa road, one recovery day and a weather-flex mountain day.

IS MALLORCA RIGHT FOR YOU?

Mallorca works especially well for riders who want a single-base cycling holiday with genuine variety: sustained climbing in the Serra de Tramuntana, rolling inland roads, easier recovery options and enough tourism infrastructure to make the trip work for mixed groups.

It is not automatically the best choice for every rider. If you want predominantly gravel riding, a city-first experience or a trip built around moving between several regions, another destination may fit better. The strength of Mallorca is how much can be done without changing accommodation every night.

THE THREE DECISIONS TO MAKE FIRST

1. Choose the base according to the trip you actually want.

2. Decide whether bringing your own bike or renting removes more friction.

3. Decide whether the holiday is cycling-first or whether riding must coexist with partners, family, restaurants and non-riding time.

WHERE SHOULD YOU BASE YOURSELF?

Pollença / Port de Pollença — strongest default when mountain access and riding from the door matter most.

Alcúdia / Port d’Alcúdia — useful when the group wants resort infrastructure plus both flatter and mountain options.

Palma — best when the city is a major part of the holiday and cycling is one component rather than the whole trip.

Sóller / Port de Sóller — a deliberate mountain-centred choice for riders comfortable with climbing shaping almost every day.

Do not choose the hotel before choosing the base. Read the dedicated Where to Stay in Mallorca for Cycling guide for the full Pollença vs Alcúdia vs Palma vs Sóller decision framework.

WHAT THE RIDING FEELS LIKE

The Tramuntana supplies the headline mountain riding, but a good Mallorca trip should not be a collection of famous climbs attempted back-to-back. Inland roads can support endurance, recovery and lower-intensity days and are part of what makes the island useful for trips of different lengths and abilities.

Sa Calobra and Cap de Formentor can be major objectives, but popularity, traffic, weather and access affect the experience. Treat them as planned ride days rather than mandatory boxes to tick. Check current access and conditions close to travel.

HOW LONG SHOULD YOU GO?

A four-day riding trip can work, but a full week creates a better rhythm: arrival and shakedown, two or three important riding days, at least one easier day, and enough slack for weather, recovery and the rest of the holiday.

For the flagship version, use A Week Elsewhere — Seven Nights in Mallorca once published. It is designed to show how a cycling week can still feel like a holiday rather than a training camp.

BRING YOUR BIKE OR RENT?

Mallorca is one of the destinations where both choices can make sense.

Bring your own bike when exact fit, familiar equipment or a specific setup materially improves the trip. Rent when avoiding airline-bike handling and large-case transfers is worth more than riding your exact bike, provided the supplier can confirm the correct size, geometry, gearing, pedals and collection/return plan.

Use the Pedal Elsewhere Bring vs Rent cornerstone for the complete decision. If renting in Mallorca, use the destination-specific rental checklist rather than relying on a generic bike-category description.

GETTING FROM PALMA AIRPORT

The airport transfer is simple only until a bike case is added. If you bring your own bike, confirm vehicle capacity for passengers, normal luggage and the actual case dimensions before arrival. If you rent, include the rental collection and return journey in the comparison rather than treating airport transport as the only logistics question.

The dedicated Flying to Mallorca With a Bike guide covers the destination-specific transfer decision.

WHEN TO GO

Spring and autumn can be attractive for cycling; summer heat and winter daylight or variability can materially change how you plan the day. No seasonal label replaces a current forecast. Mountain conditions can differ from the coast, so recheck the route as well as the hotel weather.

CYCLING-FIRST OR HOLIDAY-FIRST?

Mallorca is unusually adaptable here. A cycling-first trip naturally points toward the north or a mountain-oriented base. A mixed holiday may place more weight on Palma, resort amenities, shorter morning rides and afternoons with non-riding companions.

The planned Ride Before Lunch guide, Mallorca for Riders and Non-Riders, will handle that decision in detail without turning this hub into a family-travel article.

THE MALLORCA COLLECTION

Use this hub to enter the right guide rather than reading five versions of the same advice:

• Where to Stay in Mallorca for Cycling — base and accommodation decision.

• Mallorca Cycling Packing List by Season — climate and mountain adaptation of the master Packing System.

• Flying to Mallorca With a Bike — Palma airport and case-transfer logistics.

• Sa Calobra Logistics — how to plan one major ride day without letting logistics ruin it.

• Mallorca Bike Rental Checklist — destination-specific rental questions.

• Take Your Own Bike or Rent at the Destination? — universal decision framework.

• Flying With a Bike — What to Check Before You Book — airline and itinerary planning.

• The Packing System — the universal packing methodology.

• Post-Flight Bike Check — arrival inspection before the first meaningful ride.

BEFORE YOU COMMIT

Choose the base before the hotel; decide bring-versus-rent using the whole trip rather than a single fee; confirm accommodation bike and case storage; leave arrival time for setup and a shakedown; build at least one easier or weather-adjusted riding option; verify road access, forecast and transport close to departure; and identify a qualified local workshop as contingency.
