For a first Moab trip, rental is our working default. Your own bike wins only when familiarity and setup outweigh the logistics and local-support advantage.
WHY MTB CHANGES THE DECISION
A road rental comparison can focus heavily on fit and gearing. In Moab, the correct category, suspension, tyres, brakes and trail suitability can matter just as much. “I own a mountain bike” does not automatically mean it is the bike we would choose for the intended Moab week.
OPTION 1 — RENT: DEFAULT FOR MANY FIRST-TIME VISITORS
Lean rental when:
the trip is 3–5 riding days;
the rider wants local replacement/support if something fails;
the personal bike is not ideal for the selected terrain;
a large bike case would force a bigger rental vehicle or awkward hotel storage;
or the rider wants to compare trail/enduro categories before committing.
Before paying, confirm exact bike category/model, size, suspension travel/setup, wheel size, tyre casing/tread/tubeless status, brakes, pedals, damage terms, replacement/support process and whether the bike is appropriate/permitted on intended routes.
OPTION 2 — FLY YOUR OWN
Bring your own when the bike is well matched to the trails, exact setup materially improves confidence, and the airline/vehicle/hotel chain is straightforward.
Price the full chain: airline fee/treatment, case, larger vehicle if required, hotel storage, assembly time, mechanical contingency and the return repack. Do not compare an airline fee with a rental price and call the cheaper number the winner.
OPTION 3 — SHIP
BikeFlights becomes particularly relevant for domestic Moab travel. Price door-to-door cost, protection, transit time, packing requirement, receiving/storage at the destination and the return shipment. Confirm the hotel/shop/operator will actually receive and securely hold the case/bike before booking.
Shipping can remove airport handling but does not remove packing, receiving or damage risk.
OUR DECISION BY TRIP TYPE
First Moab trip + 3–5 days + suitable rental available → RENT.
Experienced Moab rider + ideal personal MTB + longer stay → FLY or SHIP based on total logistics.
Driving to Moab → BRING your own if it suits the terrain.
Family/mixed holiday with heavy luggage → RENT becomes more attractive.
Rider needing a highly specific setup unavailable locally → BRING.
THE COMMERCIAL OPPORTUNITY
WHAT NOT TO DO
Do not recommend the cheapest rental without matching the trail plan.
Do not recommend flying a personal bike merely because the reader already owns it.
Do not describe shipping as hassle-free.
Choose according to the trip, not a commercial relationship.
