Location details
Choose the base before the hotel.
Each town creates a different ride map, transfer burden and wider holiday. These are functional choices, not interchangeable hotel locations.
La Fortuna / Arenal
Use it for inland riding, hot-spring recovery and broader adventure; road conditions and support matter more than headline distance.
Las Catalinas
A compact Guanacaste coast option with local trails and a car-light centre, suited to a polished second half of the trip.
Tamarindo area
More restaurants, accommodation and activities, with less immediate trail coherence than Las Catalinas.
Recommended accommodation
Value, premium and splurge stays by function.
These labels compare trip fit rather than fixed room prices. Rates move sharply by date; compare the live total and confirm secure bike storage, case space and workshop access.
Arenal Manoa
A practical Arenal resort for travellers balancing riding, volcano activities, recovery and space.

Las Catalinas short loop
5 km-plus · tropical singletrack
Start: Pura Vida Ride, Las Catalinas
Use Principal and La Cuesta as the compact local introduction described by Las Catalinas, with rental and trail guidance at the start.

About 22 km · coastal singletrack
Start: Las Catalinas trailhead
A longer lap through the wider trail system with moderate-grade flow, technical sections and coastal exposure. Hire a local guide when the map is unfamiliar.
Open route source ↗Arenal Epic route
75 km · about 1,950 m climbing · gravel/MTB
Start: Arenal event route area
Use the published event course only with current local validation or supported guiding; it mixes road, gravel, steep climbing and singletrack.

Vehicle names are not capacity guarantees. Share passenger count, case dimensions and assembled-bike requirements before paying.
Choose SJO or LIR from the whole route
SJO often suits Arenal-first itineraries; LIR often suits Guanacaste-first trips. An open-jaw plan can remove a long backtrack.

Las Catalinas riding stay
One coastal base with adjustable loops and no long internal transfer.
- Arrival: bike fit and trail-pass orientation.
- Day 2: 5 km-plus short loop with a guide.
- Day 3: beach or recovery day.
- Day 4: 22 km Reto route if dry and suitable.
- Day 5: shorter repeat, repairs and packing.
Arenal plus Guanacaste
Four nights inland and four nights on the coast.
- Arenal: arrival, guided local ride and one adventure/rest day.
- Transfer day: pre-booked vehicle; do not schedule a feature ride.
- Las Catalinas: short orientation loop, recovery day and 22 km Reto option.
- Use SJO for Arenal-first or LIR for coast-first unless an open-jaw fare works.
Supported multi-region cycling
Choose this when luggage, bikes and route access should be one contract.
- Operator briefing and bike fit near the arrival gateway.
- Three or four supported riding stages selected for surface and season.
- At least one non-riding recovery day.
- Finish near the departure airport rather than backtracking across the country.
- Confirm exactly which transfers, meals and bike damage terms are included.
Supported-trip comparison
Use support when it genuinely connects the regions
This is an e-MTB and broader-adventure option, not a universal answer for every road or gravel rider.

Detailed planningRead the full guide+
Costa Rica combines cycling with a broader premium adventure holiday rather than cycling in isolation.
WHY COSTA RICA WORKS
Costa Rica supports road, gravel, mountain biking and guided-tour formats, alongside accommodation, transfers, wildlife and broader adventure experiences.
Costa Rica’s official tourism organization promotes biking as an adventure activity across multiple regions. That breadth is both an opportunity and a warning: the hub cannot pretend the entire country is one cycling base.
IS COSTA RICA RIGHT FOR YOU?
Choose Costa Rica when cycling is a major reason for the trip but not the only reason. It is particularly strong for couples/families/groups where some travellers want riding and others want wildlife, beaches, hiking, rafting, wellness or simply a resort day.
A rider seeking a pure European-style road-training base may find Tucson or Mallorca simpler. Costa Rica earns its place through the combination of riding and adventure.
THE FIRST DECISION: INDEPENDENT OR SUPPORTED?
This is the core trip-format decision.
Independent trip — more flexible and potentially better for mixed groups, but route selection, road surfaces, transfers, weather and mechanical support require more work.
Supported cycling trip — higher cost but can solve luggage, routing, support vehicles, local knowledge and multi-region movement.
Unlike some destinations, a supported trip here may be the better answer for many readers rather than an upsell added after the editorial recommendation.
ROAD, GRAVEL OR MTB?
Costa Rica is best treated as mixed-surface/adventure rather than forced into one discipline. Route surface and local conditions can change the equipment decision materially. Every itinerary should specify the actual surface expectation and bike category rather than simply label the trip “cycling Costa Rica.”
BRING OR RENT?
Rental/support should receive a strong initial lean for multi-region trips because flying a personal bike around a holiday with repeated transfers can create unnecessary friction.
Bring when exact setup matters and the itinerary is cycling-first with a clear receiving/transport plan.
Rent when the trip moves, support is available, or the traveller wants to combine cycling with other activities without carrying a case.
GETTING THERE / MOVING AROUND
San José and Liberia is best treated as gateway choices tied to the actual itinerary. A rental car can be useful for a family/mixed trip but road conditions, vehicle type, luggage and bike capacity must be considered. For a supported cycling itinerary, transfers may already be part of the product and should not be duplicated.
A REALISTIC WEEK
A coherent first week should be a cycling + adventure itinerary rather than seven consecutive ride days:
Day 1 — arrival / transfer / setup.
Day 2 — moderate orientation ride.
Day 3 — feature cycling day.
Day 4 — non-riding adventure / wildlife / transfer.
Day 5 — second riding region / feature ride.
Day 6 — Ride Before Lunch + beach/wellness/family afternoon.
Day 7 — flexible activity / short ride / departure setup.
SUPPORTED-TRIP COMPARISON
Ebiking Costa Rica is the first named comparison for the supported e-MTB and adventure branch. Its multi-region format may suit riders who want routes, bikes and ground logistics connected, but it is not automatically the answer for a conventional road or gravel trip.
Verify the exact itinerary, bike specification, daily riding, transfers, luggage, mechanical support, cancellation terms and rider-level fit directly. This is a desk-researched comparison, not a claim of personal testing.
